TAMARIND

Its Latin name is tamarindus indica, in Spanish: tamarind, palxuchuc (in Mexico), Catalan: tamarinde, Galician and Portuguese: tamarinheiro, French: tamarin, tamarinier des Indes, English: tamarind, Dutch: tamarinde, German: Tamarinden and in Italian: tamarind.


Thanks to the Arabs, it became known in Europe in the Middle Ages, where due to the nutritional properties of its bittersweet, refreshing and laxative pulp in large quantities, it became something well-known but at the same time exotic.

It reached the American continent through the Spanish, probably at the beginning of the Colony. Its cultivation spread rapidly in the tropical areas of our country, especially in the states of Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas and even Yucatán, where it is known as pah-ch'uuk. In Acapulco, tamarind is found in the wide variety of sweet enchilados.


WATERMELON
