The secretaries were internationally recognized from 1952 when Maria Barrett, president of the trade association instituted it with the help of C. King Woodbridge, president of Dictaphone Corporation, and Harry F. Klemfuss, a businessman.

In its beginnings, secretaries were associated with tasks with typewriters performing typing tasks after a couple of women dedicated themselves to promoting the typewriter as a new invention in the year 1873.
